Exercise

What would you call the following equation?

[(x + 1)2 - 2x - 1] / x2 = 2

Solution

In order to easily analyze the equation, we need to simplify it as much as we can. If we expand the numerator, we will obtain:

[(x2 + 2x + 1) - 2x - 1] / x2 = 2

x2 / x2 = 2

1 = 2

As shown, this is a false equation. In algebra, we only work with true equations.
